From general waste to energy production


 

What do we class as General waste

We’ve often used the term ‘General’ to cover a multitude of wastes, from coffee cups to food and from paper plates to paperwork, but in reality we see everything from oily rags to cardboard boxes mixed in with the more obvious factory waste. In short, it’s any type of waste that cannot be recycled.

 

So, how do we avoid this happening? It’s really a case of marshalling the activities at source, ensuring that containers are correctly labelled using our Signage Design Service, the people on site are educated as to why waste needs to be segregated and finally we need to make sure you have the right containers sited for the application required.

 

Following these rules we aim to achieve 100% diversion from landfill of all general waste.

 

Let’s clarify this by listing some of the waste we would call ‘general’:

  • Broken glass
  • Crisp, sweets and biscuit wrappers


Where does the term Waste to Energy come from?


When waste is taken out of the General route and placed into Waste to Energy (W2E) the process generates a form of electricity or heat from solid combustible fuels

We follow stringent guidelines during this process and have full control during any material’s life. For further explanation of how we achieve 100% landfill diversion see below:


General Waste  
  • Your vehicle is weighed via calibrated weighbridge
  • The details of your load are submitted to the weighbridge clerk
  • The clerk instructs our driver to tip your load in a designated bay
  • Your load is submitted for examination by a qualified site operative
  • The material is transported via mechanical handling to the hopper of our MRF*
  • Any and all recoverable materials are extracted via the MRF* for further processing
  • All non-recyclable materials exit the MRF* and are transported for W2E** preparation
  • The vehicle arrives at the W2E** Depot, is weighed and prepared
  • Materials are shredded to 100mm
  • These materials pass through a tromell screen and are fed into an autobaler
  • The resulting bales are wire-tied and placed in safe, secure storage
  • Contracted haulage companies collect the baled material
  • The material is transported to an R1 Status Energy Recovery Plant
  • The R1 Status ensures the process is fully audited is energy efficient
  • Two Transfrontier Shipment contracts facilitate the movement of fuel to Germany/Holland for total energy recovery via W2E facilities
